General information Location Ukraine is the largest country on the European continent, situated at the crossroads between Europe and Asia and borders on Belarus (891 km), Hungary (103 km), Moldova (939 km), Poland (428 km), Romania (169 km) in the south, Romania (362 km) in the west, Russia (1576 km), Slovakia (90 km). The Black Sea and Azov Sea separate the country from Russia and Turkey. Total area of the country is 603.7 sq. km. It is larger than France (544.000 sq. km.), Spain (505.000 sq. km.), Sweden (450.000 sq. km.) and Poland (312.700 sq. km.). Population The population of Ukraine is nearly 46 million people. The largest city is Kyiv – nearly 5 million including suburb area. Other 4 cities with the population over one million residents are: Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovs’k, Odesa, Donetsk. Ukrainians form 73% of the whole population, Russian – nearly 22%, Jewish – 1%, other – 4%. Climate The climate is temperate continental, Mediterranean only in the southern Crimean coast. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed, highest in the west and north, lesser in the east and southeast. Winter vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold further inland, summers are warm across the greater part of the country and very hot in the south. Religions Traditionally people in Ukraine belong to the Orthodox Church and the Greek-Orthodox Church (Catholic with Orthodox Rite), but Latin Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam and numerous other religious denominations are spread in this country. Languages The official language in Ukraine is Ukrainian. Many people prefer to communicate in Russian especially in eastern and southern part of Ukraine. Other languages are Romanian, Polish and Hungarian. Power Ukraine is a constitutional democracy republic with the President as a head. Ukrainian power is divided into three main branches: executive, legislative and judicial. The executive branch belongs to the Cabinet of Ministers, the legislative one belongs to Supreme Council. At the centre of judicial power is a Supreme Court. Economy Industry: Heavy machinery, industrial equipment production, machine tools, large electrical transformers, ships, locomotives, agricultural machinery etc. Agriculture: Ukraine is a major producer and exporter of a wide variety of agricultural products, including sugar, sunflower oil, flax, different crops and dairy products. The main crops and products are grain, sugar beets, sunflower seeds, vegetables beef and milk.
