Interesting places:

Lviv Opera House

Lviv Opera and Ballet House, Lviv’s population special pride, is one of famous and most beautiful places in Europe. The theatre was built by a famous Vienna architect Z. Gorgolevsky in the style of «Vienna pseudo Renaissance» which is a mixture of different architectural styles. This imposing building is richly decorated from the outside and has sumptuous interior. Now there are 25 operas, 15 ballet performances and 2 operettas in the theatre’s repertoire. These are works of Ukrainian composers, as well as world classics Bise, Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Straus and others. The performances are in Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Polish languages.

The Carpathian National Park or the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve,

as it’s called in Ukraine, is one of the biggest and most interesting objects of the Ukrainian Nature Reservation Fund. Almost 2.5% of the territory of Carpathian region is protected by the reserve, ecosystems of which are regarded as the most valuable on our planet, and since 1993 they are a part of the UNESCO international network of biosphere reserves. The Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which total area is 57880 hectares, consists of six separate areas and botanical reserves of the government significance.

Present from Ukraine:

Petrykivka

In the heartland of Ukraine, in the Dnipropetrovsk area, among the wheatfields of Ukraine, lies the small village of Petrykivka. It is here that a unique school of decorative painting developed back in Kozak times, and flourishes to this day. It is said that the Petrykivka style first developed as a form of wall painting-women would apply floral designs to the whitewashed wall of their houses with broad strokes of bright paints. Later these same designs were applied to all sorts of household goods-spoons, trays, chests, plates. The Petrykivka style of painting is characterized by birds and plants executed in bold strokes of bright colors. Flowers and berries predominate. It has been adapted in more modern times to paper, canvas and wooden eggs.

Interesting events:

Ukraine’s Malanka festival

combines various elements of Halloween, Mardi Gras and New Year. The celebrations of the Feast of Malanka begin on the night of January the 14. It’s very difficult to give Malanka a proper definition — it’s a sort of performance, Ukrainian style, which is so much older than what modern artists call «performance». It’s a festival of folk humour and spontaneous jesting. It’s a ritual some parts of which defy any explanation — a ritual of such a long history that it would be futile even to try to establish when it started. There are some elements in it that suggest that the Malanka festival may be thousands upon thousands of years old.

Restaurants:

Vezha Kramariv

In this case, Vezha Kramariv («The Guards Tower») is not such a fanciful name as it sounds. The hearty restaurant is spread across a carefully restored medieval bastion on the fringe of Lviv’s Old Town. Unlike previous inhabitants of the tower, you needn’t worry about having your dinner interrupted by a horde of invading Tatar warriors. Instead you can settle back in a huntsmens style interior and tuck into a variety of Ukrainian and European dishes.
